Aluminum: Sheet, Cast, Iron, Rims

how to recycle aluminum cast iron sheetMany people scrap their old car parts, most of which are made of aluminum. These are valuable scrap materials that are easy to collect and don’t require lots of sorting or processing. Here’s what you need to know about scrapping different kinds of this metal.

How To Recycle Aluminum Sheets

Extra sheets can present a problem for those who have extra metal from previous projects they don’t need. If you have sheets that are clean, meaning not combined with any other material, and in good condition without dirt or debris, then you could get a good price for them at the scrap yard.

Sheet aluminum does not just come in large sheets. Old pots and pans, old antennas, old chairs, and other items are also made of this material. Check the object with a magnet to be sure it is pure, and then collect it for scrapping.

How To Recycle Aluminum Cast

Cast aluminum can be found in grills, patio furniture, kitchenware, and car parts. When these items are no longer functional, the metal can be recovered and recycled into other items. Cast aluminum is classified into two groupings: “breakage” and “clean.” Breakage material contains other metals and sells at a lower price than “clean aluminum.”

Remove nuts, bolts, brackets, and other bits of metal from the cast piece. A socket wrench and pry bar will be helpful in removing non-aluminum scrap. Hardware may be attached with rivets. Drill through the rivets with a drill bit of the same diameter to remove the hardware from the cast piece.

Clean the grease and debris from the scrap. Household degreasing cleaner and a power washer will remove residue. Separate cast aluminum from other types of aluminum, including beverage cans. This material is bought by the pound, and separating the types of it will ensure you get paid the right price at the recycling center.

How To Recycle Aluminum Rims

In order to get the best price on the rims, you need to make sure that they are not attached to tires.  Make sure you remove any dirt from the rim. No other attachments or rubber should be present.  Check for lead wheel weights and the small rubber or plastic valve for airing up tires.
